Clinical Analysis Laboratory

Analysis performed

The Clinical Analysis Laboratory performs analysis of hematology, microbiology, coagulation, immunology, clinical chemistry and hormonal assays. The medical personnel assist the patient in assessing the appropriateness of the request for analysis and in interpreting the results.

Preventive Check-Up

Regular examinations are essential to maintain a good health state throughout the lifespan. Prevention targeted screening, based on physical characteristics, risk factors and stages of life are the most effective way to monitor their own health.   ➤   Read more

Home Samples

Nurses can take samples at home at the request of the patient. Samples will be taken from Monday to Saturday at 07:00 to 09:00, in the areas of San Giovanni, Ardeatino and EUR upon reservation. To arrange a home pickup, please contact the head nurse of the Outpatient Clinics at (Tel. +39 06.5150.11).

HIV testing

The examination of the HIV test requires the patient to present himself at the Chief of Staff Department (Monday to Friday, h. 09:00 - 18:00). The test results may only be retrieved by the patient and this may not be delegated to another.

Focus: CSF and Prothrombin Time

For inpatients admitted to the hospital, there is cerebrospinal fluid testing. CSF testing is of particular importance in the field of clinical neurology. For example, CSF examination is used as a support for magnetic resonance imaging for the early diagnosis of multiple sclerosis or to rule out other diseases. The lumbar puncture is also used to detect the Tau protein and the concentration of beta amyloid, two indicators of brain damage caused by Alzheimer's disease.

The prothrombin time is used to monitor anticoagulant therapy or to assess the hemostasis of the patient. The results of prothrombin (INR) may be requested by phone only if the patient has obtained written authorization from the Chief of Staff Department.

Highest Diagnostics Standards

The Clinical Analysis Laboratory warrants its standard diagnostic efficiency through internal and external quality controls. Internal controls monitor in real time the reliability of analytical results. A program of External Quality Assessment (VEQ) exists to assess the accuracy of the results and comparison with other analytical methods.

Non-Compliance

In case of unsuitable specimens the staff of Laboratory will contact by phone to request a new sample, without paying a new ticket or fee. A refund for tests not performed, such as sensitivity testing in the case of a sterile urine culture, can be requested at the Admissions Gates of the Outpatient Clinics.

Combating Infections

In collaboration with the Chief of Staff Department, the Clinical Analysis Laboratory is involved in the screening and monitoring of microorganisms resistant to antibiotics. Multi-drug resistance constitutes a danger to public health and an additional expense to the community at large. The objective is to analyze and prevent hospital infections caused by bacteria that develop on medical devices such as urinary catheters, venous and orthopedic implants.

The Clinical Laboratory Analysis collaborates with:

Exams - General information

To run effective tests is necessary to fast or refrain from eating and drinking for at least 8 to 10 hours. Small amounts of water can be taken. So as not to repeat exams or have unreliable results sugary drinks, alcohol, coffee and smoking must be avoided. Physical activity can affect the concentration of some serum components, so you should avoid strenuous exercise in the days prior to the exam. For tests to monitor drug therapy it is recommended that you maintain the normal dose of the drug. Bacteriological tests cannot be performed if there is an ongoing antibiotic therapy, but only after cessation of therapy for at least five days. For the best results for some diagnostic tests, you will find preparation instructions next to the name of the analysis.

For Genetic Tests please consult the Medical Genetic Clinic.

Service Hours for Sampling

To access the services of the Clinical Analysis Laboratory any booking isn’t required. Analysis Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 07:00 – 11:00. Before going to the testing room Admission must be carried out at the Clinics Admission Office (via Ardeatina, 306 – 00179 Rome)

How to Access the Services

SSN (NHS) – In agreement wiht the National Health Service. Due to the limited number of performances that the Santa Lucia Foundation is authorized to provide in agreement with the NHS, this access mode is only available to people exempt from NHS-Fee (priority for the weaker segment of the population) and to people under the age of 30 (priority for the economical weaker segment of the population). In some cases the access to NHS performances can follow other criteria (i.e. priority to oncological patients). This option requires a prescription from your primary physician. You cannot choose your specialist.

SIMP – Simple solution offered by the Santa Lucia Foundation as alternative to the National Health Service (SSN). Cost to the patient is mostly comparable to the ticket for NHS performance. This option does not require a prescription from your primary physician.

Private - Access to Laboratory services with direct payment or health insurance (list of insurance agreements).

ATTENTION: some clinical performances should be accessible only in some of the modalities listed above and not in all.

Availability of Lab Reports

Reports of laboratory tests are available from the date noticed on the module for retrieval. If necessary, the patient may require a partial or complete report before the date indicated by the module. The special request must be submitted in advance of the report to the staff of the testing room. The staff will notice the date required on the NHS prescription of physician (“red form”).

In case of a high pathological value the Laboratory will make telephone contact with the patient or the physician who requested the analysis. Some urgent conditions may require repeat sampling.

Retrieval of Lab Reports

➤   View and download your reports online

➤   Retrieval of reports on site: Information Office of the Outpatient Clinics (via Ardeatina, 306 - 00179 Rome). Monday to Friday, h. 8:00 - 19:00; Saturday, h. 8:00 - 13:00.

Reports can be collected on site by the patient or other person in possession of: 1) written proxy, 2) photocopy of patient’s identification document, 3) his/her own identification document.

The report of HIV Test may only be retrieved by the patient at the Chief of Staff Department (Monday to Friday, h. 09:00 - 18:00). This may not be delegated to another.

Reports must be collected (online or on site) within 30 days from the date specified on the module for retrieval. After 30 days the patient will have to repay the full cost of the services provided.
